It averages about 12 to 15 days a mouth depending on the airline. Plus you travel the world all the time! Now for the cons of this job. Now for the initial preparation that will need to be taken to land a job with the airlines. Get it land because I'm talking about airplanes never mind. The first thing that you are going to have to remember is that you are in competition with everyone applying for that job. Even if your best friend is applying they are your competitor. You will also have to learn to present your best side at all times and brag, when necessary. Although don't brag to much. You must write down a specific goal for yourself and look at it everyday. Now that you have done that you have no time to waste acquiring the that goal. So just unplug your TV or what you us to waste time so you can focus on your goal. One thing that you are going to want to do is do research on the airline you want to be hired on to find out what they want and make yourself into that person. Remember there is a bit of luck in getting a job so you want to be as prepared as possible. The person with more experience and more qualifications will always get the job before someone who is less prepared. Here are some things that you are going to have to do to become prepared for your job. You will need to pass a first class medical. If you don't pass it you wouldn't get the job end of story. An AME, Aeronautical Medical Examiner, will determine weather you pass or not. One thing to remember is that glasses will not disqualify you. When you are about to get hired by an airline they look at everything about you your college transcripts, driving record, credit record, FAA record, and criminal record. So be sure to stay clean now and study hard. The rating that you at least want to have is your multi engine and instrument ratings along with any others ratings that will help. The more you have the more likely you are to get hired by the an airline.
I will now talk to you about the long term preparation that will need to be taken. One of the biggest and hardest habits to break will be smoking. You will not get hired if you smoke. If you have any other annoying or distracting habits that you know about this is the time to work them out. Work on your posture also. When you walk in to your interview you want to present your self as a lively and fit person. Also don't wear earrings or have tattoos cause they will hurt your chances of getting a job. So start a exercise program now. Do aerobic and strengthen all your muscles about three times a week. You will be surprised about how good you feel after just a couple of weeks. When you are in college you want to strive for a four year degree because most airlines now in days are requiring that level of education. Also when you are in extra curricular activities try to channel that into a leadership role so that you look even better to the airlines. Now you have two routes that you can take to become an airline pilot, the civilian path and the military path. Both have there pros and cons. The military gets you the top of the line training but get you little flight time. Plus with only a limited number of spots available for military pilots your chances decrease even more. But the biggest thing is they pay for your schooling and your training. While the civilian route will be a lot more expensive and you are a not know by the airlines. The advantage of this route is that you have flexible time table. So this means if you take the civilian route than you will working even harder to stand a chance against the military pilots when competing for the job.
You are getting closer to your goal here are is some intermediate preparation. You are going to want to buy your self a nice suit. It should be either navy blue or gray depending on your size. You want a darker navy color if you are small and a more gray suit if you are a big person. Also you want a shirt that will flatter you, in most cases it is white, and a bright tie. Next you want to make sure that your log book is correct, if not make fix it right now. There is nothing more unprofessional about them finding and calling you out on a mistake you could have fixed. When you get the application the first thing you should always do is make copies of it in case you mess up. And when you finish the application make sure to make copies in the event of a unforeseen incident. One of the biggest things ever when ever you fill out a application about yourself never ever lie!
