Social Science
PSY 1010- General Psychology I took this class my fall semester of 2012 at SLCC. By taking this class I fulfill my social science credit. Below on the page I have posted my essay on my thoughts and experiences with psychopathology.
Reflection I picked this assignment for my ePortfolio because I found the subject of psychopathology to be very interesting. It is something that, as I wrote in that paper, I have experienced with my friends who are schizophrenic. By reading the book and watching the movie on psychopathology, I learned many interesting facts about the history of psychological disorders and what causes them. Some of the things I learned about schizophrenia I didn't know before and it will help me to better understand what my friends are going through.
This assignment demonstrates my ability to take what I have learned and to apply it to my life. I will be able to take what I learned about psychological disorders and use it to humble myself to remember: no matter how bad their social stigma they are human. As a human they deserve to be treated just as well as anyone else. I believe that this assignment demonstrates my learning in all the SLCC learning goals too. Using critical thought, I added personal experiences and my own ideas and speculations. The paper is well thought out and put together, displaying professionalism. Although psychology isn’t my chosen field of study, I still really enjoy it. I enjoy all the fields of science! With my major of being Astronomy, it may come as a surprise that I can still use psychology. Being human we have to look out for all our bias especially in scientific experiment. |

Signature Assignment: Pychopathology I chose to watch the video on psychological disorders, i.e. Psychopathology. The study of mental disorders is called psychopathology. The video talked about three major groups of psychological disorders: anxiety, mood, and schizophrenia. (461, 470, 480) One out of every five Americans suffers from these, which accounts for over 20% of the population. It seems like the power of the mind is similar to a coin: there are two sides to it. “Because we can love, we can be jealous. Because we can remember the good, we can recall the bad and dwell on it. Because we can think about the future, we can fear its uncertainty. It’s as if each coin of the psychological realm has two sides one that mocks and demeans the other.” It also talked about how in the past metal disorders were thought to be the cause of demons, demanding radical and inhuman treatment of patients. One such procedure was to drive a stake in to the mentally disordered patient’s skull to release the “demons” trapped inside. It wasn’t until a French physician by the name of Philippe Pinel said that mental disorders were not the work of demons, but instead the people were sick (456). His ideas were not met with much admiration by the public who still thought of them as inhuman. Pinel would treat them with respect instead of imprisoning them, and this led to the development of hospitals rather than asylums.
